Meet belong; Hear From The Founder

We’re ASKWHO. An inclusive and supportive platform bringing like-minded people together in Dubai. Founded by Matt Gaziano and Mike Askew and backed by a brilliant dynamic team, they have brought to life the new social hub of Dubai. Hear from Mike about why and how ASKWHO came to be.

Why did you begin ASKWHO?

I moved from London to Riyadh in my early twenties to work as a Project Manager. I travelled there alone and quickly realized that meeting new like-minded people was very challenging, to say the least.

After living in Riyadh away from my family and friends, I began to notice a negative impact on my emotional and mental wellbeing. I then moved to Dubai and believed that it would be easier to meet new people. In reality, it wasn’t and it became apparent that others were facing similar challenges. As a result of this, Matt and I came together to bring this concept to life that is needed in today’s world.

We went to market in late 2021 and after 2 years of highs and lows, iterations and one major pivot, we have delivered a product to market that people adore.

How is it different to other social media platforms?

ASKWHO has been described as a “home from home” as we are focused on connecting people in the city where we live. This is different from other social media platforms. I believe they should be classed as entertainment platforms that, when you take a step back, actually drive very little value into our lives. These platforms can bring out unrealistic versions of ourselves that don’t reflect who we are or what we actually care about.

With ASKWHO, you can meet like-minded people who live in your city. It’s a unique opportunity to share, gain knowledge and meet up in real life. The value we promote is making new friends and there isn’t another social media app that does it quite like us.

How does ASKWHO help?

Having lived in the middle east for over 8 years, I saw the need to begin a community. Facebook groups weren’t up to standard. The disorganization and difficulty of using them made it challenging to meet like-minded people. We aim for people in the region to seek the benefits of real human interaction and generally improve their lives and mental wellbeing. Providing local people with a community that they can belong to and depend on is at the root of what we do.

How is it designed to nurture mental health and improve people’s wellness?

ASKWHO makes it easy for people to immerse themselves with positive people who are in their city. Social apps are only as good as the people using them. Our community is extremely supportive and connected. It’s fantastic to see how people have come together within the app, and meetups are arranged on a range of topics most weekends through ASKWHO. The goal of this app is to help people to experience more in life.

What are your expansion plans for the future?

I often hear founders give statements such as “we want to conquer the world”. However, we focus on the community and the people within it. We are very grateful for our journey so far and if we can support people in other countries later, we would be honoured.

Join us on our platform that is designed to improve people’s mental health and combat loneliness. The organized group format enables users to make friends with like-minded individuals, share tips and information about their city, and feel a better sense of belonging.

The Dubai Social App You NEED; Getting Started with belong

We’re ASKWHO. It doesn’t mean much to you now but it soon will. We’re on our way to shake up the Dubai social scene. We will help you make real connections, discover your interests and make this place your home. Here’s everything you need to know.

The Facts.

Today, we’re more “connected” than ever. So why do 71% of active social media users feel lonely? This is significantly higher than the people who don’t use social media at all. It gets worse because this number is rapidly rising. So this isn’t just a problem, it’s an epidemic.

Having hundreds or even thousands of followers on social media is just a facade of popularity. The realisation that you may not have a real connection with these people can negatively affect our mental wellbeing. So it’s time for change – and we’re starting with Dubai.

The total expat population in UAE in 2021 is 8.84 million, which is approx. 89% of the population. But, people only stay on average for 2-3 years. That does NOT make it easy to make friends.

You might live in an apartment block where no one speaks your language. You might work remotely and have no access to an in-person office. Whatever your situation – we want to make it easier for you to find your tribe.

Our Mission.

Forget followers, find friends. We are done with toxic, lonely social media that actually disconnects us. We want more, and you deserve more. We want to give you an empowering, supportive and inclusive platform – and you can help us make it happen.

With ASKWHO, make true connections that last a day, a night, or a lifetime. Find new friends who are passionate about the same interests as you. Ask people who care about your burning questions and get to know Dubai like you’ve lived here your whole life.

Let’s transform your social life – together.

For You.

At the heart of our mission is you. We keep talking about making real connections – but how? Getting started couldn’t be easier. Just create your profile and off you go.

ASKWHO has specific groups tailored to your interests. Join as many as you like and talk to like-minded people who may also be living in a new place and discover the city together. Follow different niche topics and get ready to take virtual connections into the real world.

Share, ask, recommend – whatever you’re into, get involved, discover and explore. Are you buzzing? You should be. Ask questions about Dubai, life, relationships, and everything in between. Get answers from experienced locals, complete newbies, and from people you never thought you’d speak to.

If you’re on a solo walk or coffee break, use the app to find others and get to know someone new. Share your amazing Dubai experiences and get inspired by what people like you are up to.

No more loneliness, no more fake friends. Are you ready for your social life to get a lot more hectic?

Community Matters; The Value of belong in Dubai

We’re here to bring a new social hub to Dubai. Why? Because community is the core of civilization. But finding like-minded people in a new place can be difficult. That’s the problem co-founder Mike Askew faced. Hear about his experience and how ASKWHO is bringing a new community to Dubai.

The Background

Moving from London to Riyadh and then to Dubai, my co-founder Matthew and I both experienced how hard it can be to make a ‘home away from home’ and find new friends with similar interests. From this, the idea for ASKWHO was born. We both strongly believe that nobody should feel isolated, struggle to make friends or experience a sense of inadequacy because of the unrealistic spectacles they see on social media.

The Importance

Extensive research has proven the importance of community for our physical and mental wellbeing. In fact, “People who are more socially connected to family, friends, or their community are happier, physically healthier and live longer, with fewer mental health problems than people who are less well connected.”

But when you move to a new place, you are no longer physically connected to your friends and family so the emphasis becomes solely on community. Therefore, community becomes one of the main pillars of our social life that takes care of our happiness, physical well-being and mental health. It became apparent that we needed to provide this community for expats living in Dubai.

The Solution

With this in mind, we developed a dedicated group app focused purely on your city, we have complex algorithms within the app that help match like-minded people. We’ve set the groups ourselves so they’re easy to join and cover over 150 topics ranging from Fitness, Foodies, Lifestyle, Knowledge and Outdoors.

We provide a supportive space for people to share advice, and recommendations, find out what’s happening, arrange meet-ups and do more together in real life. We can’t wait to continue on this journey and bring a safe community to more people.

What Killed Facebook for Millennials and Gen Z?

Facebook changed the world. It changed how people connect online. It was the biggest thing around and stayed that way for years. Then the cracks started showing. First came the e-cards, then came the Minions memes, and before you knew it every Karen in a hundred-mile radius was complaining on Facebook because they had nowhere else to go.

Let’s face it, Facebook has seen better days. It’s where you go to see what you were looking at on Reddit two days ago. Or two weeks ago.

Facebook’s time could be coming to an end. While it still has billions of users, Facebook is slowly losing its hold on younger people, especially Millennials and Gen Z. What happened? What killed Facebook for Millennials and Gen Z? Is there a new alternative on the horizon?

Girls taking selfie
  1. Facebook Groups Lost the Plot

We use Facebook to stay in touch with others. We join Groups and communities and talk about shared interests. At least, that’s how it used to be. That was back before Facebook completely lost the plot.

Facebook Groups are now a bit of a mess. They are filled with spam and unwanted ads. Even if you have the best adblocker in the world it won’t save you from the MLM scheme the admin is trying to con you into. Young people want somewhere they can talk to each other without someone throwing themselves into every conversation.

These groups TRY to foster a community. They try to give you a place to have a virtual hangout. Then you spend a few days there and know it was pointless. It’s not long before you’ve quit the group to get away from it all. We get it Karen, you found yourself in a pyramid scheme – we don’t want to join you there.

  1. It’s Not a Good Use of Your Time

Most people are becoming more aware of how much time social media takes up. It’s true that you can spend hours sifting through your Facebook feed, but what good does that do you? This isn’t to say that social media can’t be a force for good. There are lots of amazing things you can do with social media. It’s all about how you use it.

You want a social media platform that lets you communicate with likeminded people in your city, talk to them, and maybe meet up in real life. You want a more localized solution where you’ll find people like you. A platform like ASKWHO lets you connect to local people and talk about your shared interests. Get together with them and create genuine lasting friendships and relationships with other people.

There’s no telling where that other person on Facebook is from. How much of your time is wasted on talking to them. People want a social media app that lets them connect but doesn’t waste their valuable time.

  1. Facebook Has Seen Better Days

Anyone can tell you that trying to be cool is the most uncool thing you can do. While Facebook spent years at the top of the charts with young people, its monumental fall from grace has made it anything but.

You only have to look at some of Facebook’s most recent advertising campaigns to understand this. The company has made several ads about how much it has failed but promises to do better. These promises are good for older and more experienced users. They remember the “good old days” of Facebook and hope to see a return to form. However, they don’t do anything for younger people and new users. Gen Z don’t want to log in and see what their parents are up to… or their parents to see what they are up to. They want to be somewhere fresh and new.

Facebook isn’t as cool as it used to be. Between all the trolls, misuse, and privacy concerns, the brand has never been less relevant for younger people.

  1. Other Social Apps… Just Do It Better

Most people use Facebook as a utility more than anything else. They talk to people, share photos with friends and family, and use Facebook for professional networking. The problem is that Facebook isn’t the best option for doing these things anymore. Not in a world where Instagram, LinkedIn, Reddit, Twitter, and TikTok exist.

Instagram lets you share your world with others. LinkedIn connects you professionally. Twitter lets you share your unfiltered opinions. Reddit has massive communities with great moderation to keep things on topic. TikTok lets you explore your creativity. ASKWHO lets you build a local community. Everyone else does what it does, but better.

Ready to Use ASKWHO?

There are plenty of reasons young people are abandoning Facebook in droves. But if you want a social media platform that really gives you what you need, then check out ASKWHO, the latest social media app for young Dubai residents and expats who want a little corner of the internet for themselves. Early access is waiting, so sign up today.

What you need to know about the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

If you didn’t know, this weekend (10th – 12th of December) is the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. It’s no secret that the finale is going to be an exciting one, with both of the championship leaders, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, on equal points for the final race of the season.

Last weekend we saw the Formula 1 Championship go to Jeddah Corniche Circuit, with non-stop action throughout. The race had 2 red flags within 16 laps, and several incidents that caused 5 drivers to not finish the race. This now leads us into this weekends race, which is hosted here in Abu Dhabi on Yas Island.

Previous Years

Formula 1 first raced in Abu Dhabi in 2009 and has raced there ever since with Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel being the only drivers to get repeat wins at the track. In 2020 we saw Max Verstappen take his first win at Yas Marina Circuit, but will he make it onto the list of repeat winners and win the 2021 Championship this weekend?

The Track

This year we see changes to the Yas Marina circuit, track alterations include replacing turns four, five and six – a chicane and hairpin – with a single, quicker corner. Then also removing a sequence of slow bends from turns 11 to 14 with another fast left-hander, and easing turns 17 to 20. Because of the changes, 3 additional laps have been added this year, making it a more enjoyable race for spectators, after being criticized the track is ‘dreary’. Many drivers have shown support for the changes, including 8 times Grand Prix winner Daniel Ricciardo. Why not join the track chat on ASKWHO, and see what other people think?

Off-Track Entertainment

There’s so much to do during a race weekend, with off-track events taking place from Thursday-Sunday. On Thursday don’t miss out on a pit lane walk, it’s a great way to see the teams prepping the cars for the big race. Or watch the Thursday After-Race concert featuring Khalid. Off-track entertainment also includes food trucks, super park passes, game zones and live entertainment. See what other people at the event are up to over on ASKWHO.
